Nurse time per resident (HPRD)
How "how many nurses" becomes one comparable number.
The hook
#π The pizza idea
A stack of pizza split between a few kids = big slices each. The same stack split between a crowd = slivers. What matters isn't how much pizza exists, it's how much each kid gets. Staffing is the same: not total hours, but hours per resident.
#The real idea
HPRD = Hours Per Resident Day = nursing hours Γ· resident-days, summed across the quarter. Two facilities with identical nurse hours score differently if one has more residents β the bigger census thins everyone's slice. Flip it to size a plan: nurse-hours = HPRD Γ residents. CMS scores three separate HPRD measures (total nurse, RN, and weekend), each looked up in its own table β so you can't fix one by piling hours into another.
#π Maple Grove example
80 residents, total nurse HPRD 3.30
total nurse-hours/day = 3.30 Γ 80 = 264 hours/day
at ~7.5 hr/shift = 264 Γ· 7.5 β 35 nurse shifts/daySo "3.30 HPRD" is about 35 nursing shifts a day across all roles.
#Remember this
HPRD is an average across the whole building and the whole quarter β not a per-resident guarantee, and it swings with census.
#Try it π
A facility runs 4.0 HPRD with 50 residents β how many nurse-hours/day, and ~how many 7.5-hr shifts?
